History

Azov is one of the oldest towns in the estuarial region of the River Don. It has been a significant point in the transport chain through historical times.

The Port of Azov was first mentioned at the beginning of the 18-th century (liberation of the Azov Fortress by Peter the Great from Turkish invaders). In 1865 the Azov channel was deepened and in 1888 a stone quay was built.
In 1895 14 015 600 pood (one pood = 16.3 kg) of different cargoes passed through the Port. The Azov Port Administration was formed in 1904. The main business at that time was dried fish, caviar and grains export.

Later the Azov Port used to handle timber and bulk cargoes such as sand, gravel, and other construction materials for local and regional consumption. Currently the Port comprises a cargo terminal and an adjacent passenger terminal on the same quay line. Both parts are operated by the Azov Sea Port Joint-Stock Company, which was established in 1993.

Since December 1994 the Port became international and open for ships with foreign flags.

Geographical Position
and Technical Characteristics

The Port of Azov is located in Azov town (population 85 thousand people) on the Southern bank of the River Don, some 15 kilometers from the estuary linking Azov Sea to the Russian Inland Waterway Transport System (IWT) via the Volga-Don channel (access to Volga, Kama and Northern river networks in close reach of main Russian industrial centers and Caspian Sea). The area is a suitable link for 3000 - 5000-ton sea-river vessels (up to 4m draft) access between the Mediterranean and Russian IWT.

Due to advantageous geographical position the Port is suitable for transshipment of cargo coming by ships, trains or trucks from hinterland. The nearest airport is in Rostov-on-Don.

The Port handles about one million tons annually primarily export cargoes such as scrap, metal (part finished steel, sheets, coils, slabs etc.) timber, both sawn and logs, ore, fertilizers, grain, coal and other cargoes. Most commodities are exported to countries bordering the Black Sea and the near Mediterranean. Import cargoes represent a small proportion of the total throughput.
