Injection machines and cored wire
for extra - furnace treatment of steel

One of the modern and promising production process of extra-furnace treatment of steel and cast iron is the process   of cored wire injection with various fillings into the melt in the ladle. This method can be applied practically in any steel producing divisions regardless of steel-teeming capasity in order to perform final correction of metal chemical content, refining metal from sulpher and non-metallic inclusions and for changing of the content and the form of modification of the latter.
At JSC Chepetsky Mechanical Plant  for the first time in Russia there was established manufacturing of mills for producing of cored wire and injection machines for injection of wire into the liquid metal in steel-teeming ladles.

Cored wire production process provides permanent profiling of the original band in roll gaugees, followed by forming of the lock, reduction and reeling on of the finished wire into bundles ( inner and outer diameters of bundles are 550-600 and 800-1100 correspondingly), with mass 400-800 kg. The bundle can be reeled out without special devices.    
Some types of injection machines for injecting of cored wire into the steel teeming ladles were designed and are now being produced at JSC ChMP.

Cored wire
Cored wire in cut Cored wire consists of filling and metal jacket (Fig.1). Fillings represent the mixtures sufficiently uniform regarding content and seperate materials with particle dimensions not more than 2,5 mm. Metal jacket represents cold rolled steel band of Russian steel grade 08 with thickness 0,4-0,5 mm and width 45-65 mm. Cored wire
 
Cored wire with various fillings Metal jacket provides the following functions:   
- protects the filling from the influence of atmosphere and moisture when keeping and transporting and from oxidation when passing through slag   
- provides the required rigidity of the wire   
decelerates reaction of filling component with liquid steel which permits to control the depth of immersion of wire into liquid metal by means of changing of feeding rate and jacket thickness.

Sheets of steel 22 are used for manufacturing of tubes for oil and gas wells. Rejection of tubes produced from melts treated by cored CaAl wire, regarding metallurgical defects while ultrasonic testing, has decreased as to compare with common melts , blown by SiCa powder. Thus, the treatment of steel type 22 by cored wire CaAl can be considered promising for full-scale metal production.
